Top Zimdancehall songs of 2023
The Zimdancehall industry had an excellent start to the year with Winky D’s Eureka Eureka album receiving critical acclaim for its socio-political commentary. Despite political pressure and a de facto ban from national radio and TV, the artist has been praised at home and abroad for tackling the country’s problems through music. For his important work, Winky D won the Best African Dancehall Entertainer Award at the 40th International Reggae and World Music Awards.
This year has also seen new artists emerging in the popular urban genre, contrary to 2022 when critics said it was starting to die out. Besides Winky D, artists such as Qounfuzed, Freeman HKD, Enzo Ishal, Shashl, Nicky Genius and Nutty O also made big contributions to the Zimdancehall scene, with some winning top awards and performing outside the country.
