UK exec launches Gigomi music business learning hub
Former Abbey Road Studios’ boss and CEO of Wise Music Group Dave Holley has launched a music business learning resource and podcast platform aimed at young and emerging musicians.
Gigomi, which stands for getting in and getting on in the music industry, aims to help musicians understand all commercial aspects of the industry while building a fanbase and online presence. The platform offers advice from industry experts who break down what needs to be done into tasks and suggest how best to go about completing them.
Each week, Holley will interview an artist or music industry executive about their experience in the business of making music. They will discuss what emerging musicians can do to give themselves the best chance of breaking into the industry and how they could make a decent livelihood while creating music.
Some early guests include artist manager Paul McDonald, lawyer Ann Harrison, live agent Paul Franklin, sync specialist Sarah Lord, publisher Ian Ramage, and Blur’s Dave Rowntree and record company executive Miles Leonard.
The podcast series starts with a conversation with manager and music industry academic Phil Nelson, who talks about how young musicians can build an audience and attract the attention of people who can advance their careers.
“I’ve worked in the music industry for 30+ years and I’m continuously learning how it works,” Holley said. “I have a network of friends and colleagues who have built successful careers as artists or helped develop the careers of many of the biggest UK names on the world music scene. There is not much that they don’t know between them.
“If you are a young musician who is serious about breaking into the music industry and carving out a long-term career you couldn’t hope for a better team of advisors. I started Gigomi to share the knowledge, insights & advice of this network with the next generation of musicians.”
Listeners can access the podcasts on platforms such as Spotify, Apple and Bandcamp as well as on Gigomi, where additional learning resources can be found. All written content is also available as audio files that can be listened to on a phone.
