Put together by MultiChoice Nigeria, the weekly show offers undiscovered local talent a platform to kick-start their careers. This year’s competition received more than 10 000 entries.
The 25-year-old singer and lawyer from Delta State bested fellow finalist Precious Mac to clinch the ultimate prize comprising ₦35m (about $45 000) in cash, a brand new SUV, and a record deal, among others. Progress Chukwuyem won the competition last year.
“This journey has been a life-changing experience, and it would not have been possible without the support and love of my family, friends and especially my incredible fans,” Victory said following his win.
Other emerging musicians who made it to the Top 10 are Savvy Henry, Constance, Goodness, Abraham, Quest, Reigny, Ose Daniel, and Chisom.
Season 8 of Nigerian Idol was hosted by IK Osakioduwa, and saw musicians D'banj and Simi joining industry veteran Obi Asika on the competition’s jury panel.
“Victory Gbakara has always been a star and one could see his potential right from the auditions stage,” Asika said. “We the judges are proud to watch him grow throughout the competition and emerge as the show’s winner.”
Multichoice West Africa CEO John Ugbe said: “Nigerian Idol has become a powerful platform for investing in the Nigerian entertainment industry and has grown to become a vehicle for aspiring exceptional singers who can make a mark.
“The industry is projected to reach $14.82 billion by 2025, and we need to be deliberate about its trajectory and how young Nigerians will contribute to that future. Nigeria is rich with creative ingenuity and musical talent that can shape the world, and we are proud to play a role in actualising this dream for thousands across the country. We are invested in doing even more.”
