West African artists prepare for Kampala takeover
In what has been described as a foray of West African artists into Uganda, Nigerian songbird Seyi Shay will be the headliner at the 18th edition of Blankets and Wine Kampala at Lugogo Cricket Oval on 20 August. Just over a month later, her countrymen Tekno and Mr Eazi will headline their own concert at the same venue on 15 September.
Seyi Shey will be joined by Burkinabe singer Alif Naaba at the Blankets and Wine event, which is sponsored by Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL). East African artists on the bill include Shifah Musisi, T Bro, Lagum, Rabadaba, Joel Sebunjo and Winyo.
“We are working to always make the Blankets and Wine Kampala experience bigger and better with each edition,” said UBL brand manger Grace Namutebi. “We have selected a line-up of artists with a blend of music genres to give our consumers a grand festival experience to create memories.”
Tekno and Mr Eazi, who will be in Uganda for the first time next month, will be headlining the Naija, Ghana to Kampala concert. Local musicians set to perform alongside the two acts are Bebe Cool, Ykee Benda, Cindy and Navio. In February this year, Mr Eazi collaborated with Ugandan duo Radio & Weasel as well as dancehall artist Pallaso on a remake of his single ‘Skin Tight’.
Meanwhile, Nigerian singer Runtown will share the stage with Uganda’s Sheebah at the Runtown Experience Kigali concert in Rwanda on 23 September. This after the two artists collaborated on a yet to be released single titled ‘Weekend’. Local musicians who will join the two artsts at the concert are Charly & Nina, Bruce Melody, Yvan Buravan, Urban Boyz, Oda Paccy and Active.
Sheebah's promoter in Rwanda and Factory Africa CEO Collin Mugabo said he was planning to bring bigger shows to Kigali in order to make the city a leading destination for concertgoers.
"This concert comes to utilise the growing field of entertainment in Rwanda,” he said. “It will be a great experience for whoever turns up. We want Rwandan people to have a blast.”
