Zim: 2020 NAMAs announce nominees
The nominees for the 19th edition of the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMAs) were announced in Harare, Zimbabwe, on 7 February.
The awards ceremony will be held at the Harare International Conference Centre on 29 February.
Mambo Dhuterere is leading the list with three nominations in the Outstanding Male Musician, Outstanding Song and Outstanding Album categories. Dancehall singer Winky D and Freeman boast two nominations each. Winky D is nominated in the Outstanding Male Musician and Outstanding Song categories while Freeman got the nod in the Album of the Year and Outstanding Song of the Year categories.
The Outstanding Female Musician category sees Tammy Moyo, Janet Manyowa and Ammara Brown receiving nominations. The Outstanding Music Video Award features Ammara Brown, Flying Bantu, Ishan, and Amy & The Calamities.
“A total of 1 290 entries were received at the close of the nomination period and thereafter a panel of independent adjudicators was appointed to preside over all the submissions,” NAMAs chairperson Ruby Magosvongwe said.
“Over the past two months, using predetermined criteria, these adjudicators have been engaged in a rigorous judging process. This process was based on submitted entries as well as those identified by individual and institutional monitors appointed to track excelling artists throughout the year.
“These adjudicators who are seasoned and highly professional in various genres adjudged the entries submitted and only works that were produced between 1 December 2018 to 30 November 2019 were judged.”
