Zim: Jah Prayzah scoops three gongs at NAMAs
Jah Prayzah was the top winner in the music category at the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMAs) held at Reps Theatre in Harare, Zimbabwe, on Saturday.
Prayzah, who recently featured Jamaican musician Jah Cure on the ‘Angel Lo’ video, walked away with three gongs in the Outstanding Male Musician, Outstanding Album and Outstanding Song categories.
Gospel musician Janet Manyowa and dancehall artist Winky D won the Outstanding Female Musician and People’s Choice awards respectively.
There were no winners in three categories, namely Outstanding First Creative Work, Outstanding Children’s Book and Outstanding 3 Dimensional, which prompted artists, music critics and fans to criticise the NAMAs.
“The NAMAs just reminded me of the Metro FM Awards last year swept by ANCYL treasurer’s Mabala Noise,” Germany-based music critic Plot Mhako wrote on Facebook.
Speaking to Music In Africa, Mhako said the 2018 edition of the NAMA was “another disappointment".
"The recently held NAMAs was flawed from the nominations to the adjudication. A lot of glaring anomalies and several results and no results left a lot to be desired. How can you have nominees and not be able to pick a winner? It’s dangerous and retrogressive,” he said.
