The song is now available for streaming and download on various digital platforms and was taken off Nyamarebvu’s upcoming album titled Tengendenge (One Africa). The single was co-written by Nyamarebvu and US artist Lionel Wharton, who also doubled as the producer. The forthcoming album is due for release next year and takes its name from Korekore, a dialect of Shona, loosely translating to ‘a new beginning’.
“If mama Africa was a literal woman in her flesh and bones, l imagine that she would express her anguish over the never-ending wars and divisions amongst her children [nations] in Africa,” Nyamarebvu told Music In Africa.
“‘Mama Africa’ is a song, which seeks to point out to the fact that chaos, hate speech, racism, Apartheid and any justified/unjustified wars will never unite Africans. The divisions that exist makes mama Africa sad and her wish is to see Africans united and to live as one.”
Other songs off the album include ‘Tengenenge (One Africa)’ featuring Tendai Maduwa, ‘Zvikoni Zvikoni’, ‘Chako Chii?’, ‘Sandi Nyore’, ‘Kiremenzia’, ‘Ndinoda Rugare’, ‘Tsotsi’ and ‘My Sweet African Couscous’.
Commenting on the album title track ‘Tengenenge (One Africa)’, Nyamarebvu said the song is “a fresh perspective of what humanity needs in the wake of the global pandemic, the chaos, the catastrophe and never-ending sorrows.”
“This time around l wish to ask the listener to consider looking within an individual's internal world to bring out joy, true freedom and bliss. My musical narrative invites Africa and the world to celebrate the many humanly differences and to savour the many shades of experience in order to ultimately embrace each other as one.”
