Davido sets sophomore for September
The long awaited and much delayed second album from Nigerian performer Davido may now reach stores in September. In the three years since his debut album ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ (2012) the singer (born David Adeleke) has seen his reputation as a hit maker grow, amassing awards, money and fans. These he has accomplished mostly with singles such as ‘Aiye’, ‘Owo ni Koko’ and the recent ‘Fans Mi’ with US rapper Meek Mill.
Yet a follow-up to ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ has been in the works for a while, with release dates seemingly picked and discarded. Initially slated for 8 June, a day after the singer graduated from university, it was shifted to 10 August. For unclear reasons, those dates were cancelled.
Fans will hope all of that may have changed with the statement from the singer’s management, Twenty20 Media. ‘We are aware that many may have been expecting the album at an earlier date,’ the statement says, ‘though we were set to release the album this month, the date has been moved. We are currently placing the finishing touches on the album and we have some exciting news coming up that will greatly benefit the album project.’
It continues: ‘Davido fans have been so loyal and consistent throughout Davido’s career that he sincerely wants to deliver the best body of work so as to express his gratitude. We have been working non-stop to deliver an album of world-class standards; for this reason it is paramount to release a well-executed album, to the best of our ability.’
At the 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards, Davido won the Best Male award, his second in the same category in as many years. His forthcoming album is titled ‘Baddest’. A tracklist released earlier revealed a 20-track album featuring singers Psquare, Don Jazzy, Runtown, Uhuru and DJ Buckz. US artists Akon, Meek Mill, Wale and Trey Songz also have guest spots on the album.
