Open call: Performance travel grant in Germany
Goethe-Institut is calling on dance and theatre ensembles, who would like to perform in Germany, to apply for travel grant.
The grant is designed for applicants from developing and transition countries.
Conditions of funding
Who is funded
- Festivals, theatres and organisers in Germany that wish to invite ensembles to Germany from “cooperation countries” receiving German development assistance.
- This gives performing artists an opportunity to present their works to German audiences and to engage with the German arts scene.
What is funded
- The theatre and dance department provides support for guest performances by theatrical and dance ensembles from “cooperation countries” receiving German development assistance.
- The funding covers only the travel expenses and shipping fees of theatrical and dance ensembles from German development assistance countries. The list of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is binding.
Note for aggregative applications: One application is sufficient for groups that seek to invite several guest performances or artists to their festival/event. The corresponding query pages contain information on how the queried data should be recorded in the case of a collective application. Often the costs can only be funded on a pro-rata basis.
Funding criteria
- Criteria for support are the quality of the production and the relevance of the organiser and a superregional visibility.
- The funding covers the travel expenses and shipping fees of theatrical and dance ensembles from German development assistance countries. Furthermore, sustainability criteria are taken into account when choosing the means of transport: For travel times of up to seven hours and/or 600 km, the organisers prefer to support rail travel. Goethe-Institut checks the eligibility of additional costs compared to airfares.
- At the time of application, no firm bookings (flights, hotels) may have been made for the requested parts of the trip.
- Travel to German-speaking countries is not eligible for funding.
Required documents
- Description of the festival or the context of the planned guest performance.
- Information about the applicant.
- Complete contact details of the applicant(s).
- A detailed financing plan (income, expenses, grants, etc.) with information on residual financing (possibly with the note “requested”) and information on possible financing from public funds.
- Three comparative offers (travel agencies, railroads, forwarding agencies, etc.); if the costs are less than €1 000 (about $1 035), two offers are sufficient.
- For air travel, additionally include an offer with the lowest CO2 emissions.
- Note whether the applicant has already received funding from the Goethe-Institut for previous projects.
- In the case of an acceptance: Indication of the bank details (with IBAN and Swift code) and naming of the contracting person.
Information about the application process
- The application must be received at least seven weeks before the end of the quarter for the following quarter, otherwise the application may have to be rejected for formal reasons.
Privacy policy
In general, measures that have already begun, i.e. projects in connection with which bookings (e.g. for flights) have already been made, cannot be funded. Before making any binding bookings, it is therefore necessary to apply for the so-called early start of measures informally by e-mail. The awarding of the early start of measures is not synonymous with a binding funding commitment.
