Pioneer DJ SA, ProAudio launch platform to support women in electronic industry
ProAudio, in collaboration with Pioneer DJ South Africa, has launched a platform to support women in the electronic music industry – in support of this year’s International Women’s Day campaign running under the hashtag #ChooseToChallenge.
The initiative, which is supported by DJ Heaven, will present a number of pre-recorded interviews and panel discussions throughout the month of March. It was hosted by DJ Abby Nurock and features a number of top South African female DJs and industry personalities, including Metro FM’s Mat Elle, Kimmy K, 5FM’s Nicole Da Silva, Si’Noir, DJ Buhle, Tamara Dey, Joy Steffens, Karma Luna, Davina Satori and Roz Agnew.
The content explores broad themes aimed at empowering and creating successful female artists, with the participants discussing subjects like what it takes to attain a career as a professional DJ, the challenges they face in the industry, and how artists are reinventing themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic. They also discuss the gear they use and reminisce about how they entered the industry.
In addition, the participants talk about inequality and other social dilemmas, including gender-based violence and femicide, and how the men and women of the music industry can come together to make a difference.
Last week, music streaming service Deezer revealed that only 4% of its top 100 streamed electronic artists are women. The company released the data as part of its efforts to help shine a light on the many challenges that women face in the music industry.
