SA: Watch Uthando Lodumo trailer featuring Babes and Mampintsha
Showmax has released a trailer for reality TV show Uthando Lodumo, which follows South African gqom artists Babes Wodumo and Mampintsha in the build-up to their traditional wedding.
The trailer opens with Babes and Mampintsha asserting they are ready for marriage. The series will follow the ‘Wololo’ hitmaker and the West Ink Records founder from proposing live on Gagasi FM in October 2020 through marriage counselling, lobola negotiations, pregnancy and the couple’s traditional wedding in April 2021.
“We're an open book in the way we live our lives,” Babes Wodumo says. “We were madly in love. We then made hit song after hit song. And we made a lot of money as a result.”
Uthando Lodumo will premiere on 30 June. It was produced and directed by South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) winner Thomas Gumede and SAFTA nominee Lungile Radu through their production company Parental Advisory.
Gumede said: “No one will be able to predict everything that happens in this show. We know it’s going to start a lot of conversations.”
Babes earned fame with the hit song ‘Wololo’ featuring Mampintsha and Distruction Boyz in 2016. The song received nominations at the MTV Africa Music Awards and the South African Music Awards. Babes Wodumo and Mampintsha had a rocky relationship, which made headlines in 2019 following a gender-based violence incident. In the Uthando Lodumo trailer, Mampintsha suggests he is dealing with the aftermath of the incident. The trailer also shows Mampintsha apologising to Babes Wodumo’s parents.
