SA mourns gospel singer Peter Mokoena
South African gospel singer Peter Mokoena died from an undisclosed illness at a local hospital on 4 July.
The ‘Bophelo Haka’ singer’s passing was confirmed by family spokesperson Thabiso Mogwatlhe. “Peter was hospitalised on Saturday because he wasn’t feeling well, and he died on Sunday,” he said. “At this point we don’t know the cause of death.”
Fellow musicians and music organisations took to social media to express condolences.
“We are saddened by the passing of legendary musician Peter Mokoena,” the South African Music Awards wrote on social media. “We extend our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. May his soul rest in peace.”
Renowned South African gospel singer Rebecca Malope wrote: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Peter Mokoena. My heart goes out to his family and friends during this difficult time. He was truly a blessing to the music industry. We thank him for his great contribution. May God give him eternal rest and the family strength to bear this great pain. Lala Ngoxolo [rest in peace].”
Another local gospel singer, Deborah Fraser, wrote: “How do I say goodbye again to one of the best I have worked with? You have made so much of a contribution to the music industry. Rest well my brother Peter Mokoena, I am saddened by your departure.”
Before pursuing a solo career, Mokoena belonged to the Pure Magic group, which he co-formed with the late Vuyo Mokoena. His hits include ‘Mina Angeke’, ‘Jerusalem Entsha’, ‘Ke Mang’ and ‘Ha O Mpotsa Kenna O’.
