SAMAs to honour Master KG, PJ Powers, Lebo M and Lindelani Mkhize
The Recording industry of South Africa (RiSA), the organiser of the South African Music Awards (SAMAs), has announced that PJ Powers, Lebo M and Dr Lindelani Mkhize will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2021 SAMAs.
Additionally, Master KG will receive the International Achievement Recognition Award following his success with the global smash hit ‘Jerusalema’ featuring Nomcebo. The song’s video has now garnered more than 400 million views on YouTube.
This after the SAMAs received backlash when Master KG failed to earn a nomination at last year’s edition despite his song’s phenomenal success. The anthem spawned an international dance phenomenon with several remixes including one featuring Grammy winner Burna Boy. Since the success of ‘Jerusalema’, Master KG has racked up impressive accolades around the world, and is currently riding high on the success of his recent international collaboration ‘Shine Your Light’ with Akon and David Guetta.
“There is no doubt that the SAMA27 honourees are worthy and deserving,” RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi said. “It is our singular honour at the SAMAs to bestow these accolades to Lindelani Mkhize, PJ Powers, Lebo M and Master KG. Theirs are stories of inspiration and accomplishments that are unmatched. We salute them and wish them only the best further on in their careers.”
Affectionately known as ‘Thandeka’, PJ Powers has been active in the industry for more than four decades with groups like Pantha and Hotline. She made a name for herself with hits such as ‘Jabulani’ and ‘World in Union’ with Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The singer has shared the stage with top local musicians such as Miriam Makeba and performed for royalty around the world like Queen Elizabeth and King Juan Carlos of Spain.
Grammy Award-winning composer Lebo M, meanwhile, is best known as the voice and spirit of Disney’s feature film and Broadway sensation The Lion King. Born Lebo Morake, the producer is recognised in Africa with his globally acclaimed work and philanthropic contributions. His impressive list of accolades include numerous SAMAs and an Oscar nomination.
Mkhize is a founding member of the gospel ensemble Joyous Celebration alongside close friends Jabu Hlongwane and Mthunzi Namba. Through his leadership at Sony Music International, the former drummer has established and developed many African artists from several genres including jazz, Afropop, kwaito and gospel, including Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, Caiphus Semenya, Don Laka, Mdu and Joe Nina. Mkhize has also served as a judge on reality competitions Clash of the Choirs SA and I Want to Sing Gospel.
