Alex FM is a non-profit community radio station that was founded in Alexandra in 1994. The station broadcasts on the 89.1FM frequency 24 hours a day, seven days a week and covers the areas of Alexandra, Sandton, Marlboro, Lombardy, Germiston, Edenvale, Kempton Park, Randburg and Midrand.
The station prides itself on being the “Spirit of the Community”. Alex FM broadcasts a wide range of daily programs that include news, religion, business, sports, music, culture and education, reaching a listenership exceeding 100 000.
The main goal of Alex FM is to be a sustainable voice of the community, promoting cultural diversity through educating, entertaining and informing its audience. The goal is to evolve the programming to half music and half talk to reach a broader range of listeners. Alex FM has the will to continue development by creating a focus on English in its broadcasts, while still including other popular South African languages such as Sesotho and isiZulu, with special programmes for these listeners.
