Goethe-Institut Nairobi to host female DJ workshop
Goethe-Institut Nairobi and Santuri East Africa will hold a training workshop as part of the newly launched Femme Electronic project from 12 to 16 June 2017.
The project, which was launched in Kenya in March, seeks to empower female DJs on the East African electronic music scene. It was co-founded by Goethe-Institut Nairobi and Uganda’s DJ Rachael.
The training will be delivered by Midi Minds Kenya in conjunction with ADA Creative Studios, and will involve both practical DJ skills and knowledge sharing. Experts will also be featured during talks by well-established DJ’s including DJ Rachael, DJ Kace, DJ Hvy Moroto Industry, DJ Andrea and DJ Imran. The training will come to an end with a concert to be held at Igiza Lounge, Kenya National Theater, on 16 June 2017. The concert will feature DJ Shock, DJ Lasta, DJ Rachael and surprise guest acts.
Aside from the training, Femme Electronic will throughout the year host weekly residencies that are currently held in collaboration with Igiza Lounge. Femme Electronic will also incorporate other activities such as an open forum where issues affecting women on the electronic music scene will be discussed. More training sessions are planned for July and August and will focus on other core areas of the programme.
Santuri East Africa, which has partenered with Goethe-Institut Nairobi in facilitating the training, seeks to develop and support a vibrant and creative East African network that enables artists to experiment, innovate, collaborate and present their work professionally to audiences both regionally and globally.
