Rwanda: 20 selected for next round of DJs Battle
Contestants for the second round of Rwanda’s DJ competition have been revealed following the conclusion of auditions at the Onomo Hotel in Kigali on Saturday.
Twenty DJs will now battle it out for the top prize in a competition organised by event management company M&K to identify and celebrate the best disc jockeys in the country and promote local music.
A panel of judges made of Rwanda’s top DJs – Pius, Sharif and Khadir – settled on 20 contestants from 49 in the male category. They will now proceed to the next round next week where they will be further whittled down to 10.
Those selected are DJs KayG, Selekta Danny, Araphat, Kiss, Khizz Beats, Mico, Selekta Gomez, Beast, Kavori, Joe the Drummer, Trapboy, Selekta Kuno, Snoop, Mikey, Mask, Kigali Beats, Sooky, Niyem, Pop, and Yan.
Only three contestants – DJ Roxy, DJ Brianne and DJ Ira – in the female category made it to the next stage.
On 20 August, a panel of judges made up of Nigeria’s DJ Neptune, DJ Khathu (South Africa, DJ Kadir (Uganda) and DJ Sharif (Rwanda) will choose the top five to progress to the finals.
The winners of the contest will be announced during the grand finale at Camp Kigali on 27 August.
The overall winner will take home a brand new Mercedes-Benz, with the best upcoming DJ being awarded a cash prize of 2 million Rwandan francs (about $2 000). The best female DJ will be awarded equipment worth 5 million francs.
The battle will be aired on RTV.
