Open call: Intellectual property rights workshop in Harare
The Zimbabwe Theatre Association (ZITA), in partnership with Dendere Arts Trust and Culture Warriors Edutainment Trust, is inviting local artists to register for an intellectual property rights workshop at Theatre in the Park in Harare on 31 January.
The workshop is designed for the arts and cultural sector, with a specific focus on theatre. All artists from various disciplines are welcome to register. It seeks to create awareness and educate artists and cultural practitioners about the importance of intellectual property rights in the arts and culture industry.
The workshop will cover the following topics: copyright, trademarks, patents and trade secrets, as well as practical advice on how to protect and monetise intellectual property. It will be facilitated by arts and cultural expert Peter Mhumi and Zimbabwe Intellectual Property Organisation representative and lawyer Nyasha Chihota.
“We believe that understanding and protecting intellectual property is crucial for the growth and sustainability of the arts and cultural sector in Zimbabwe,” ZITA chairperson Getrude Munhamo-Pfumayaramba told Music In Africa. “During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to engage with industry experts, legal professionals and representatives from relevant organisations.”
By attending this workshop, Munhamo-Pfumayaramba – who is also the founder and creative director of Dendere Arts Trust – said participants will not only contribute to the development of the arts and cultural sector but also gain valuable insights into the challenges faced by artists and the potential solutions available.
“All artists are free to come because intellectual property rights are universal but vary in genre of art so since we will be having experts it would be great to come through,” she said. “Theatre now encompasses all art forms and has even gone digital so all arts and cultural practitioners are welcome.”
Interested artists can register by sending an RSVP via email at dat.gvm@gmail.com or a WhatsApp message to +263 784 456 741 (no calls).
