Ghana’s King promise surpasses 100 million Boomplay streams
Africa-facing streaming service Boomplay has honoured Ghanaian popstar King Promise for surpassing 100 million streams on the platform, promoting the artist to its Golden Club.
Boomplay’s Golden Club is one of the streamer’s flagship artist programmes made up of musicians with unique record milestones, and the singer follows in the footsteps of local colleagues like Black Sherif, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, Kuami Eugene and Gyakie.
King Promise, by this accomplishment, also finds himself in the company of other African acts including the likes of Nigeria’s Wizkid, Davido, Fireboy DML, Joeboy and Omah Lay, as well as Tanzania’s Diamond Platinumz and Rayvanny,
Accepting the plaque from Boomplay Ghana artist relations manager Oliver Ameyedowo, King Promise said: “Special shout out to Boomplay for always supporting us [artists]. I love my fans, thank you.”
Born Gregory Bortey Newman, King Promise, whose music is a fusion of highlife and Afrobeats, tried his hand in music making during an impromptu recording session while visiting a friend that laid bare his abilities. Later, a meeting with producer Killbeatz set him up for a now flourishing career as a songwriter and vocalist.
Following the release of his debut single, ‘Oh Yeah’, the artist has been on an impressive run of hit songs including ‘Selfish’, ‘CCTV, ‘Slow Down’ and ‘Terminator’, as well as two critically acclaimed albums, namely As Promised and 5 Star. In 2022, he signed with Sony Music Entertainment UK through 5K Records imprint.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Nigeria, rapper Odumodublvck and singer Kizz Daniel have also earned Boomplay milestones this week. Odumodublvck crossed 100 million streams, while Kizz Daniel celebrated 1 billion plays, months after Burna Boy achieved that accolade.
