The nominees for the 2024 edition of Metro FM Music Awards (MMAs) in South Africa have been announced ahead of the gala ceremony in Mpumalanga Province on 27 April.
The awards are organised by the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) biggest commercial radio station, Metro FM. The nominations feature music singles and albums released between 28 February 2023 and 28 February 2024.
This year, the station received over 1 700 entries for the various categories, with Grammy winner Tyla leading with six nominations for her song ‘Water’ in Song of the Year, Best Female Artist, Best Music Video, Best Viral Challenge and Artist of the Year categories.
Amapiano heavyweights Kabza De Small and Tyler ICU scored five nods. Kabza De Small is nominated in the Best Produced Album, Best Collaboration, Best R&B, Song of the Year, Best Amapiano and Best Male Artist categories, while Tyler ICU earned Best Collaboration, Song of the Year, Best Viral Challenge, Best Amapiano and Artist of the Year nods.
The Inkabi Zezwe duo of Sjava and Big Zulu bagged four nominations for Best Produced Album, Best African Pop, Best Collaboration and Best Duo/Group.
“The Metro FM Music Awards serve as a celebration of the vibrant tapestry of South African music, where melodies become bridges that connect hearts and souls,” Metro FM business manager Kina Nhlengethwa said. “It’s a platform where artists, both established and emerging, showcase their passion and talent, igniting a symphony of inspiration and creativity. Beyond the glitz and glamour, these awards embody the relentless pursuit of excellence and the unwavering dedication to craft.”
In an effort to add more value to the awards, the winners in each category will receive R50 000, while the Song of the Year winner will walk away with R150 000.
