SA: The Joy releases new single Amaqatha Amancane
South African a capella group The Joy has released a new single titled ‘Amaqatha Amancane’ off their self-titled debut album set for release on 21 June. The song is available for download and streaming on major streaming platforms.
Recorded live at the renowned Church Studios in Crouch End in London during the album session, the track showcases the astonishing vocal talent of the five-member group.
“The track tells the tale of a Sunday at the Shisanyama, a place where South Africans go to eat, drink, listen to music and hang out,” The Joy said. “It paints a picture which will be familiar to all South Africans, these are places where people from all backgrounds come together to enjoy themselves and celebrate life. The song itself describes the miserly actions of a chef grilling meat and the calling out of their actions which are firmly not in keeping with the spirit of the Shisanyama.”
The Joy’s signature harmonies are supported by maskandi-influenced guitarwork and delicate production flourishes, thanks to their roots in traditional Zulu music and modern a capella. With the help of Instagram and TikTok, the group’s music quickly spread and they began working with English producer Two Inch Punch.
The quintet released their debut single ‘Isencane Lengane’ in May 2021, followed by the EP Amabutho – both of which helped set the group on its way to becoming a worldwide phenomenon.
The group that has caught the attention of Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson and Sam Smith recently performed at the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival alongside headlining act Doja Cat.
