Grammys 2019: Africans dominate World Music category
The Recording Academy announced on Friday the nominees for the 61th edition of the Grammy Awards ahead of the big night at Staples Centre in Los Angeles on 10 February.
Four African acts are nominated in the Best World Music Album category. The nominees include the Soweto Gospel Choir (South Africa), Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 (Nigeria), Fatoumata Diawara (Mali) and Bombino (Niger). Russian group Yiddish Glory is the only act outside Africa nominated in the same category.
Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar leads with eight nominations. He is followed by Drake who was nominated seven times. Boi-1da and Brandi Carlile received six nominations each. Carlile becomes the most nominated woman at the 2019 awards.
Cardi B, Childish Gambino, H.E.R., Lady Gaga, Maren Morris, Sounwave and Mike Bozzi also earned six nominations each.
