Piquete
Bio
Piquete is a Puerto Rican band based in San Juan.
The band is an Afro-Puerto Rican (Boricua) project that aims to balance the sensuality and rudeness of Puerto Rican popular music, both in its aesthetics, theme and musicality. Morden sounds meets traditional Afro-Puerto Rican instrumentations to achieve a musically fusion, which the band has termed as 'neo-plena' and 'bomba grove'.
Piquete is led by three female percussionist, who collectively play the barril (bomba), pandero (plena), conga, clave, guiro, cajon, maracas and alfaia (Brazil membranophone).
In July 2018, the three ladies decided to form Piquete and added four members who play guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. This gave them creative freedom to play, compose and sing, mixing modern sounds while maintaining the traditional Afro rhythms of Puerto Rican bomba and plena.
Piquete aims to demonstrate the street music and people of Puerto Rico. It also challenges social attitudes of acceptance regardless of gender, age, socio-economic status or religion.
With an original repertoire, Piquete is currently in the post-production phase of their debut single 'Fluid Flow', which will be released in the summer of 2019.
