Mekelle University, Department of Music Arts

The Department of Music Arts, Mekelle University, is ready to produce skilled manpower in music fields of studies such as music performers, organizers, arrangers and music composers, based on the felt needs of stakeholders and the local market, like cultural centers, Colleges of Teacher Education, Musical bands, advanced music technology trading and Ethiopian film companies.

There are institutions of music in the country that offer music education at a diploma level in Tigray and other regional states and at a bachelor level in Addis Ababa University. However, these do not satisfy the demand for music arts professionals. Therefore, launching the Music Arts department at Mekelle University (MU) at a bachelor study level was timely and imperative to meet the needs and expectations of the stakeholders. It is believed that the graduates of the Department of Music, MU will supply the trained manpower demands of the local institutions on the bases of their fields of specialization.

Over the years, the Department of Music in Mekelle University will be the second full-fledged higher institution of music in Ethiopia. Out of a feeling of responsibility to preserve, nurture and cherish the cultural assets of the earlier generation and providing a way for the contemporary generation to create something of its own, it becomes necessary to develop the program of music education fit for talented Ethiopian students, and to lend support in raising the professional prestige and usefulness of music and aesthetic works in Ethiopia.
