Davina Satori
Bio
Music is the vibration of life and I have always been a musician. Although I knew this at a young age my love for music, was discouraged. No one who looked like me, coming from where I did, made it in music industry. When I started, there were almost no female deejays and often I was the only female music producer. Although this has changed substantially, the visibility and industry support of female music producers is slim. - This is why I am here. I am a music producer, dj, remixer, recording engineer, sound library curator, and, a trained social anthropologist. I believe in the power of music and art as a tool for social transformation. My vision is to grow and develop a network of female music producers and engineers in South Africa.
As a dj I have sessioned for various artists such as Thandiswa Mazwai, Nothende, and Khethi to name but a few. As a music producer I have remixed tracks for The Brother Moves On and Jack Knife. I have also composed music for theatre productions and performance art installations. Besides my work behind the desk, I am no stranger to the stage. I have toured with 340ml, the blk jks, as well as perform at numerous festivals (OppiKoppi, Lake of Stars, Bushfire etc.) I host a beat maker/producer night called SPACE/BAR which showcases the best that Jozi has to offer in the beat maker/ alternative/indie scene. I released my debut EP Audio Diaries which is available on bandcamp. I am currently working on my second EP which will be released on Alpha Pup Records. As a queer artist, I understand the importance of visibility and the importance of creating safe spaces for expression. From my own experiences as an artist and an event promoter I have developed a framework for inclusive events that ensures safety and encourages creativity through the power of story telling.
Besides making music I do art research. I am passionate about using sonic interventions to tell our stories and to organise as artists, to ensure a sustainable, art industry. We are only as powerful as our community
