ACCES Conference sessions (2018 programme)
Conference sessions
Thursday 15 November
Opening Night
ACCES 2018 opens with a great line up of activities including a short award ceremony and great performances celebrating authentic Kenyan music.
Royalty collection – Africa's biggest enemy?
According to CISAC’s 2017 Global Collections Report, royalty collections in Africa are still less than 1% (€67 million) of global collections. With relatively low levels of internet penetration and challenging conditions for copyright holders in some countries, this is a critical time for African creators in terms of earning potential in a rapidly growing digital market. How to unlock that potential and create a fair legal environment for artists? How can African creators promote and protect their rights to ensure they are fairly remunerated in a globalised world? These are some of the questions this panel will attempt to answer.
Music production essentials
This is a highly inspiring workshop targeting both established and aspiring record producers. This session will feature top record producers and engineers who are keen to share their top production secrets on beatmaking, music arrangement, DAWs, plugins, mastering and useful production tools.
Understanding artist management & best practices
This presentation by Rikki Stein aims to draw inspiration from his experience as Fela Kuti’s manager, and to translate his understanding of the artist management space. While sharing the challenges and personal achievements of his career, Stein's presentation will look at the transformation of artist management in an increasingly global and cross-border industry, which has given birth to a generation of 'music entrepreneurs'. How does a manager contribute effectively to the development of an artist? What is key in music carrier development in today's DIY era? To answer these questions and others, Stein will be joined by award-winning Cameroonian musician and entrepreneur Blick Bassy.
The re-emergence of traditional sounds in East African urban music
“The only way young East African musicians will secure a distinctive identity is by embracing traditional music.” – words by prolific Kenyan producer Tabu Osusa. While southern African and West African music is making waves on the international market, various initiatives are striving to cultivate uniquely East African sounds by bridging the gap between digital and analogue as well as traditional music and contemporary sounds. This session will be led by Santuri Safari co-founder Mwalimu Gregg Tendwa, who has been very active in this field.
Africa's booming streaming economy – opportunities & challenges
Streaming is now the most popular way to consume music globally. The demand for music streaming is also evident in Africa with an increasing number of localised services being launched alongside global players like Spotify, Deezer, Google Play and Apple Music. As smartphone penetration in Africa increases, streaming services give African music more opportunities to find a global audience. This panel will provide a clear picture of the state of the streaming industry in Africa while also identifying opportunities.

Music education in Africa & Africa in music education
This panel will provide insight into the state of music education on the continent, as well as the opportunities, challenges and best practices associated with this sector. This panel also aims to highlight local and international music education initiatives available to Africans and evaluate the impact of African music in the global curriculum. In addition, the panel will seek to enquire about how to develop a curriculum that allows students to express and develop their musical creativity within their own cultural environments, the teaching tools available at various institutions, how to formalise training and educational efforts, and how to encourage institutional cooperation on the continent and internationally.
How virtual reality (VR) will reshape the music industry
As virtual, augmented and mixed reality become increasingly accessible to consumers, their convergence with music will open the door to new possibilities in the industry. This technology is expected to have a profound effect on the music business and its existing models. Could augmented reality be one of the most important revenue streams for music professionals in the future? How can artists take advantage of this technology? There are many questions still to be answered about this exciting tech space.
