Jazz Divas: A Legacy of South African Jazz Excellence
Founded in 2004 by renowned promoter Stan Mosia, the Jazz Divas have become a cornerstone of South African jazz in the Eastern Cape. Comprising five dynamic female vocalists, the group has significantly contributed to the post-apartheid jazz scene, preserving and elevating the genre with their soulful and powerful performances.
Origins and Members
Based in New Brighton, Gqeberha, the original lineup of Jazz Divas featured:
Vuyelwa Luzipo – Former vocalist of the infamous Soul Jazzmen.
Nomzamo Mkuzo – A remarkable jazz talent.
Shirley Lebakeng – A former member of the Black Slaves Jazz Band.
Welekazi Pemba – A strong voice in the ensemble.
Leo Rwanda – Bringing her unique artistry to the group.
As time progressed, the group welcomed Thandeka Marwanqa, another former member of the Black Slaves Jazz Band. After the unfortunate passing of Nomzamo Mkuzo and Shirley Lebakeng, Linda Tsaone joined the group, continuing their rich musical journey.
