Mamakaffe and The Afreekans Band
Bio
Meet Mamakaffé, the Franco-Ivorian singer with a Jamaican soul. Born Mariam Cherif Brou Legros, this dynamic artist embarked on her musical journey in the heart of Jamaica in 2013. Deeply passionate about Reggae and Rastafarian culture, she immersed herself in Jamaican life for a decade, nurturing her craft and unique sound.
Her rise was meteoric. Just a year into her career, Mamakaffé's hit "The Beauty of Jah Plan" clinched the Best Reggae Song award at the prestigious Akademia Awards in the USA. This remarkable achievement also made her the first African artist to be signed by the renowned American label, VP Records. Her 2017 album, "Slave," earned a nomination for Best Reggae Album at the Grammy Awards, solidifying her place in the Reggae music scene.
Mamakaffé draws inspiration from Reggae legends like Peter Tosh, Lucky Dube, and Bob Marley, influences that have seamlessly blended into her music. Her multilingual prowess has seen her perform across Jamaica, France, and both English and French-speaking regions of Africa. She has graced stages from Senegal to Rwanda, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Canada, where she enjoys significant acclaim.
After a transformative decade in Jamaica, Mamakaffé chose Paris as the new base for her musical journey. Here, she independently produced her latest EP "Succes," which was shortlisted for the RFI Discovery Prize in 2022. Now, she returns with a brand-new, self-titled EP, sung entirely in French, created with the expertise of Laurent Guéneau and Valérie Maucourt.
The first single from this exciting new project, "Nakupenda Afreeka," is a heartfelt tribute to the African continent. It has been available on all platforms since March 3rd, 2023.
