D'banj
Bio
D'banj (born Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo on 9 June 1980) is a Nigerian singer-songwriter, harmonica player and businessman. He was introduced to the harmonica by his older brother, Femi Oyebanjo, who died in a plane crash at age 17.
As a tribute to his mentor Fela Kuti, D'banj uses a fusion of Afrobeat and Afro-pop to bring his music to life. His songs are based on his life, often hilarious, but with a deeper meaning, documenting the struggle of a young Nigerian trying to achieve his dreams. He performs in Yoruba, English and pidgin.
D'banj has won several music awards, including Best African Act at the 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards and Artist of the Year at the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards. He has also won a BET awards for Best International Act: Africa (2011). He adopted the stage name D'banj, a combination of his first name Dapo and his surname Oyebanjo.
D'banj is best known internationally for his 2012 summer hit 'Oliver Twist', an uptempo dance fusion of Afrobeat and electro that topped the African charts in 2011 and was a top-10 hit in the UK singles chart a year later, reaching No 2 on the UK R&B chart.
'Oliver Twist' was the last song made by D'banj with long time partner and producer Don Jazzy. Thereafter D'Banj signed a deal with Kanye West's GOOD Music label.
In 2013, he released an album featuring artists from his record label. Titled 'D'Kings Men', the album was met with modest success. Most notably, Kanye West was featured on the song 'Scapegoat Remix'.
By 2015, a slew of singles from D'Banj continued to be warmly received, and the singer snagged a few endorsement deals including one by telephone retail company SLOT.
In 2016, after a performance of a new song 'Emergency' at the GLO/CAF Awards, the song was released online. A music video for the song followed weeks later.
