South African Traditional Music Achievement (SATMA) Awards

Bio

The South African Traditional Music Achievement (SATMA) Awards is an annual ceremony that celebrates music made in the style of the people and various language groups of South Africa. Founded by Dumisani Goba in 2005m, the awards aim to bring together the various ethnic and racial groups of South Africa through a celebration of the nation's diverse musical heritage, while combating tribalism and other divisions. The official slogan is 'My Culture, Your Culture, One Nation', in line with the vision to unify all ethnic groups in Africa and the diaspora through traditional music.

The SATMA Awards recognise the traditional music of most ethnic groups in the country, as well as journliasts, comedians, radio hosts, cultural organisations and others who work to promote traditional music and culture in South Africa. The National Heritage Council were fundraisers and overseers of the SATMAs from 2008 to 2010, thereafter this role was then taken over by the SATMA Awards Foundation. The ceremony is held in different locations every year, including KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
