Spotify launches programme for emerging artists
Spotify has launched Radar, a global programme for upcoming artists, with the music streaming service announcing South African R&B singer Elaine as its first local artist to benefit from the initiative.
Radar represents Spotify’s commitment to artists across all stages of their development, in order to help them deepen their connection to new and exciting audiences. The programme was launched alongside 19 sister programmes spanning more than 50 markets.
Elaine shot to stardom in 2019 following the release of her first two singles ‘Slip Away’ and ‘I Just Wanna Know’. Her debut EP is titled Elements. Inspired by her experiences, Elaine’s music is a mixture of trap soul beats and catchy lyrics with soothing and mellow tones. Her EP has been described as “a delivery of pure R&B soul”.
“I am forever grateful to Spotify for allowing my music to be accessible to my supporters around the world,” Elaine said. “I am beyond excited about being part of Radar, and I cannot wait to share new music with everyone that’s been a part of this journey with me.”
Spotify managing director for Middle East and Africa Claudius Boller said: “Leveraging Spotify's influence as a leading audio network in the music industry, Radar is Spotify’s promise to continuously keep identifying and supporting artists on every step of their music journey.
“It also provides an exciting opportunity for artists to engage with new audiences across the world as they are building their careers. With the potential to introduce local talent to an international stage, Radar will continue to showcase the diversity of South African, and African, sounds and culture to the world, and demonstrate the range of what the continent has to offer.”
Artists that are part of Radar will be supported across different verticals, from first-hand editorial and on-platform support through the many curated Spotify playlists available on the platform and more.
Elaine is currently Spotify’s most streamed local female artist in South Africa for 2020 (1 January to 1 March). Her continued success has brought her to the attention of international brands and music industry leaders alike.
In November, Apple Music featured Elaine on the platform’s New Artist Spotlight programme.
