COVID-19 lockdown delays SA National Arts Council international bursary results
The National Arts Council (NAC) has announced that it will delay its international bursaries for postgraduate arts studies for the 2020-21 academic year, due to factors related to the government-mandated COVID-19 lockdown.
The NAC said the bursary outcome was scheduled for 30 April. The invitation was designed for postgraduate studies in the relevant art fields supported by the NAC. The grant, which targets such programmes as social cohesion and nation-building, innovation, design and creation, arts platforms, strategic initiatives and capacity building, is worth R250 000 ($13 500).
The NAC was due to announce the outcomes of the funding opportunity for overseas studies this month. However, the process has been held back amid the COVID-19 lockdown, which has placed certain administrative functions on hold, it said.
“Members of the NAC’s bursaries panel have reviewed the applications received and have made recommendations to the NAC’s council, which has been unable to convene to sign them off due to the lockdown,” it said. “The NAC would like to assure all applicants that the results will be announced as soon as possible, and regrets this unfortunate delay.”
The NAC said applicants should keep checking the media and its official website for updates and the announcement of the successful candidates.
“We look forward to congratulating and celebrating with these exceptional young South Africans, who will be awarded international bursaries to address some of the rare and essential skills required by the South African arts sector,” it said.
