East Africa Rise Up to release new album
The East Africa Rise Up (EARU) network will release its latest album, Umoja wa Kidunia, on 29 May 2020 through French community label WePresent.
Launched in 2006, EARU has worked with East African artists to organise cultural exchanges and events as well as music production and distribution. Its goal is to raise awareness about global and local socio-economic issues, and make a difference in communities through music, sharing and creativity.
The new album is by Tanzanian hip hop artist Dwee, who is also a member of the Watengwa hip hop crew based in Arusha, Tanzania.
Since its launch, the network has released seven collaborative projects, which include East African Rise Up Mixtape, Rising Spirits Connection, Full Ile Laana Vol 2, Kijenge Juu Street Mixtape, Movement Street Tape, Rapvolution and Safari ya Hiphop.
All the above projects were released under the WePresent label, which also coordinates exchange programmes between French and East African artists, and organises events in France to promote the project.
EARU recently released 'Njoo Afrika', the first single off the upcoming Umoja wa Kidunia album. Elements of traditional music are evident in the song to reflect the rich multicultural population of Tanzania, while the lyrics market the continent as a tourism destination.
