COVID-19: Ghana Music Awards UK cancelled
The organisers of the Ghana Music Awards UK have called off this year’s event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a statement signed by Ekow Anderson, who heads the awards' planning and advisory board, the health and safety of stakeholders and patrons of the even remains paramount. He added the fifth edition of the awards would take place in 2021.
“After a series of engagements with the government, stakeholders and security agencies on the best practice for this year’s event, in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the board and planning committee announces that in the best interest of general safety, the fifth edition of the Ghana Music Awards UK scheduled for this year has been postponed to next year, 2021,” the statement reads.
The organisers of the event also took the opportunity to commiserate with the families of COVID-19 victims. They also urged the general public to abide by preventive protocols by health officials and governments around the world.
Top Ghanaian acts including Sarkodie, King Promise, Medikal, and KiDi were all hoping to pick up awards at this year’s edition. Unfortunately, those hopes will have to be deferred to next year.
The stars may yet win trophies at the 2020 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, whose organiser Charterhouse Ghana says it will hold the event virtually next month.
Largely a public voting platform, the Ghana Music Awards UK was set up to facilitate an environment for collaboration and cultural exchange, as well as highlight and celebrate deserving Ghanaian artists living in Ghana and the UK.
