The start of the event will coincide with Women's Day in South Africa. This year’s edition will run under the moniker Together…Apart and feature Bittereinder, Femi Koya, Bubbles, DJ Bob, Stogie T, Urban Village, Hellcats, Jacques Moolman, Kenzhero, Luma and Focalistic, among others.
The event will be hosted by Catherine Grenfell and will see musically driven content, including Koppi stories and shared tunes.
“We have seen the future. More music. More Art. And a lot more Love. This is what we do,” Oppikoppi said. This year the proceeds from tickets will go directly to the performing artists and the technical team responsible for the online broadcast
Until it was postponed in 2019 due to tough economic conditions and a wave of crime that hit the event a year earlier, Oppikoppi was one of South Africa's longest-running and best-known festivals. In its heyday, the event was responsible for launching the careers of hundreds of local musicians and its stages hosted the country's alternative music scenes, including rock, metal, experimental, electro and hip hop.
Fans will now be hoping that the online event is a prelude to the festival's return in 2021.
The Women's Day event will be livestreamed from 2pm CAT. Purchase tickets and watch the show here.
