Call for applications: 2021 CTM Festival projects in Germany
CTM Radio Lab is accepting applications for projects that explore the intersection of radio with live performance or installation. Successful projects will premiere at the 2021 CTM Festival in Berlin, Germany, between 22 and 31 January.
CTM Radio Lab was launched in 2014 by CTM Festival and Deutschlandfunk Kultur – Radio Art / Klangkunst in collaboration with Goethe-Institut, ORF musikprotokoll im steirischen herbst, Ö1 Kunstradio, and The Wire magazine.
Due to COVID–19, the scope and format of the 2021 edition remains uncertain, and the festival may be extended over a longer period into February depending on the conditions and constraints that might arise and influence the kinds of presentation formats.
Applicants from outside the EU, especially, should be prepared to participate remotely, as travel restrictions may be tighter outside the Schengen Area.
Applicants should therefore suggest interesting project presentation alternatives such as:
- Online and virtual works, installations, or other formats that do not require a performer to be physically present, guerrilla performances, small-scale events, process–based works, or other constellations that might allow for small group experiences while socially distancing.
Eligibility
The proposed project must:
- Explore the potential of combining radio and live performance/installation. Proposals that mention the creation of a radio version following a live showing will not be given priority.
- Equally, respond to CTM 2021's theme, Transformation, and be ready to adapt to remote/online or socially distanced formats if necessary.
"Art and music can amplify a multitude of voices and provide a laboratory in which we can imagine alternative practices," CTM Festival says. "They have always aimed at transformation, reshaping forms, experiences, practices, identities and collectivity. Yet, music and art worlds must also ask themselves how inequality and exploitation are inscribed in their structures."
Requirements
Applicants should submit the following documents in PDF (20MB max):
- Project description.
- Technical requirements.
- CV.
- A good sample/sketch of the proposed work (optional).
Funding
The international jury consists of artists, curators and journalists. Two selected works will be supported by a production fee of €5 000 ($5 900) each.
The technical/staging costs will be covered additionally, upon discussion with the organisers. Should an in-person presentation be possible, additional travel expenses to Germany and lodging during the festival period will also be discussed.
How to apply
Interested individuals can access the application form here.
The application deadline is 16 September.
