Pata Beat music download platform set for launch
Complaints by Kenyan musicians of exploitation by Premium Service Providers (PRPSs) are set to end with the introduction of Pata Beat, Kenya’s first transparent music download platform.
According to The Standard Digital Edition , who operate it, the new platform has partnered with the three Collective Management Organizations (CMOs) active in the music business in Kenya to ensure that royalties reach every artist registered with these organizations. This means that all artists registered with Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK), Kenya Association of Music Producers (KAMP) and Performers Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK) will automatically start enjoying the benefits of the new platform.
Doreen Mbaya, Pata Beat's head of marketing, recently told KTN Kenya: "The Standard is constantly looking for ways to appeal to the youth demographic... Not many traditional media houses have succeeded in doing this, because media houses usually have journalism as their first and most urgent priority, and entertainment usually takes second or third place, so they don't take it seriously. But the truth is we've come to a point where entertainment pays, and we can't talk about youth unemployment without creating platforms for the youth to generate content, to utilise their talents and make money from that skill..."
To download music from the Pata Beat service, SMS the song code to 22845 and check the full song list at www.sde.co.ke/music. Pata Beat is set to be launched on Friday 8 May at the Panari Hotel in Nairobi.
