Mokoomba, Elemotho and more join CT Nu World Fest
The newly renamed Cape Town Nu World Festival recently added more exciting artists to their already impressive line-up for the festival, taking place on 17 and 18 July at the Cape Town City Hall. These include Zimbabwean stars Mokoomba and Namibia’s Elemotho.
Mokoomba need little introduction following their rapid rise over the past few years. The Vic Falls locals are bringing their funky Afro-fusion beats to Cape Town, combining traditional Tonga and pan-African music cultures with dashes of rap, ska, soukous and Afro-Cuban music in an explosive live performance. Read their interview with Music In Africa here.
Joining Mokoomba is Elemotho, the powerful and poetic acoustic artist from Namibia. With three successful albums to his name, Elemotho will offer his soulful sounds from the Kalahari. A self-described musical activist and performance artist, the 2012 RFI-France 24 Discoveries award winner is a proudly African musician whose personal character resonates with the ethos of CTNWF.
Another act recently added to the bill who promises to bring a little more international flavour to this year’s CTNWF stage is Hamburg-native, Ulf Lindemann, otherwise known as Dunkelbunt. The electro-swing king has been merging electronic sounds with Gypsy and Balkan beats for over a decade and is ready to offer Cape Town a taste of his international sound.
Local talent Majozi has also been included. Beginning his musical journey at 13, Majozi is a self-taught artist who has since been steadily gaining recognition and admiration from fans and fellow musicians alike. Describing his sound as indie-folk with subtle electro influences, Majozi is set to give audiences some infectious, inherently African sounds to move to. Cool kids on the block Native Young are another local act that will be gracing the stage this year. Led by the multi-talented singer/songwriter Yannick Meyer, this motley crew of young men makes eclectic, electro-infused, Afro-cool music.
Local vinyl DJ Paul Waxon will be returning to CTNWF to offer event-goers a wide range of music, spanning decades, genres and continents. "I'm looking forward to playing the Nu World festival. I had a really good time last year. The crowd and the event are a perfect fit for my style and music," said Paul, who has a special love for Afrobeat and Highlife and is always on the lookout for anything soulful.
Other acts already confirmed for the fest include Simphiwe Dana, Spoek Mathambo & Fantasma, DJ Spoko, Vukhazithathe, Toby2shoes, Aero Manyelo, Özlem Bulut (Turkey) and Tcheka (Cape Verde) in collaboration with Derek Gripper.
The date is fast approaching and this year’s festival is set to be a musical journey that will enrich, educate, unite and celebrate African pride and culture. The organisers of the Cape Town Nu World Festival invite you to “come for the familiar and leave with something different”.
