Nigeria: Tems named Spotify Radar Africa artist
Nigerian singer and producer Tems is Spotify’s latest Radar Africa artist. The development was announced on 28 September and follows the release of her EP For Broken Ears last week.
Spotify launched the Radar programme in March to provide a platform that allows new voices to fortify their interaction with fans and tap into a wider listenership. Other musicians who have been featured on the music streaming service’s global Radar programme are South African artists Elaine and Willy Cardiac.
"Spotify has played a major role in exposing me to fans across the globe," Tems, who is an alumna of YouTube Music’s Foundry development programme, said. "As an independent African artist, my music has now been able to travel the world to reach millions of people.”
The musician said Spotify’s backing meant that she could now engage with her fans more directly, creating a new experience in the process. "Spotify has supported my music since I started and I’m excited to be a new Radar artist. It feels like I have access to a whole new world."
Spotify's artist and label partnerships manager for South Africa, Phiona Okumu, said: "Discovery happens quickly in the streaming era and Radar Africa is one of the tools that Spotify is using to give emerging artists the opportunity to have their music discovered on a global platform."
"Radar Africa is also a great way to showcase the diversity of rising African sounds and culture to the world, positioning itself as a powerful partner for rising artists. Tems’ assured feminist stance and musical direction is a gift to us all. We are so lucky to witness how young rebel gang leaders are changing the way women in music from Africa are viewed."
Born Temilade Openiyi, Tems is fast becoming an industry favourite in her home country with her unique take on neo-soul and alternative R&B. She is best known for songs like 'Try Me' and 'Looku Looku'.
