Call for entries: Audio-visual festival in Kenya

Organised with the support of the Ministry of Health, the festival aims at bring the creative industry on board in supporting health promotion.

“The COVID-19 pandemic exposed existing gaps in the health sector, in this case, the need for collaboration between public and private entities. The ministry is keen to keep general health education and public health awareness going on in a holistic nature,” the organisers said.

Entrants are expected to submit content that can facilitate health communication and education in the country. 

The submission process is free and the works must have been produced not earlier than January 2020. 

The festival seeks to:

• Communicate health education/capacity-building efforts to stakeholders.
• Identify capacity-building needs and resources.
• Facilitate communication opportunities relating to health education.
• Provide specialised expertise/resources on a specific issue that arises.

Interested individuals can submit in the following categories:

• Best Animation
• Best Informational Video
• Best Spoken Word
• Best Ticktock Challenge
• Best Video Skit
• Best Public Service Announcement
• Best TV Commercial
• Best Audiovisual Content for Children

Note: 

• The content should not exceed 15 minutes. 
• Producers of the selected audio-visual materials must provide an HD package to be screened at the festival. The item must be clearly labelled.
• Producers of selected pieces must acknowledge that the Ministry of Health reserves the right to promote the productions on any medium.
• By submitting audio-visual material to the festival, entrants agree to allow their films to be screened by the festival during the festival run, for which they will submit at no charge to the festival.
• By submitting to the festival, entrants are admitting copyright ownership of everything submitted.
• The festival reserves the right to disqualify any submission at any time, if there is any question of ownership, copyright infringement or any sign of disrespect (in any form of media) of the festival or its representatives.
• There is no premiere policy.
• All audio-visual materials must contain English and/or Swahili subtitle files.
• The festival will inform all submitting parties if their films have been successful or not. 
• Producers should to take responsibility that all submitted works are copyrighted. The organisers will not be liable for any copyright infringement.

Selection criteria

The jury, comprising leading screenwriters, directors, producers and health messaging experts, including filmmaker Zippy Okoth, will evaluate and select the best pieces in each category. Selected materials will then be voted for by the public. The winners will receive trophies and certificates.
