Call for applications: Italian scholarships for African academics

The scholarships are dedicated to professors and researchers from developing countries who wish to research with a professor at the University of Pavia. A total of five scholars will be selected for a stay of four to 12 weeks. 

Scholars with no connection with professors at the University of Pavia are advised to request for a research proposal form to be filled out and sent back to cicops@unipv.it. 

The period of stay should take place within the following dates: 

• 1 March to 23 July.
• 13 September to 17 December. 

Eligibility

Interested scholars can apply in the following departments:

• Department of Musicology and Cultural Heritage
• Department of Humanities
• Department of Political and Social Sciences
• Department of Law
• Department of Economics and Management
• Department of Chemistry
• Department of Physics
• Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture
• Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering
• Department of Mathematics
• Department of Drugs Sciences
• Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences
• Department of Biology and Biotechnology Lazzaro Spallanzani
• Department of Brain and Behavioural Sciences
• Department of Internal Medicine and Therapeutics
• Department of Molecular Medicine
• Department of Public Health, Neuroscience, Experimental and Forensic Medicine
• Department of Clinical-Surgical, Diagnostic and Pediatric Sciences

Scholars must have at least two years of teaching experience or activity within international organisations and institutions.

They must be from the following countries:

• Burundi, the Gambia, Niger, Benin, Guinea, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Liberia, Tanzania, Chad, Madagascar, Togo, Malawi, Uganda, Congo, Mali, Zimbabwe, Eritrea, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal, Cameroon, Congo, Lesotho, Swaziland, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, Namibia, Algeria, Gabon, Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Libya, Tunisia and Mauritius.

Requirements 

• CV ideally in European format with a list of publications (file to be named: Surname_Name_CV).
• Invitation letter from the professor or researcher with whom the applicant intends to collaborate (file to be named: Surname_Name_Letter).

Selection criteria

The following will be considered when selecting applicants:

• The scientific relevance of the proposed project, especially when integrated with similar projects developed by the University of Pavia.
• The CV of the candidate.
• The fair distribution of grants between the department involved and the geographical regions of origin of the applicants.

Remuneration

Once the winners are announced, the University of Pavia will:

• Send an invitation letter in support of the visa request (with prior arrangements and in exceptional cases a contribution for visa issuing will be granted).
• Book a return flight ticket.
• Stipulate a health insurance policy and personal accident insurance;
• Arrange accommodation at a University college for the period of stay in Pavia.
• Provide a card for meals at University canteens.
• Provide a weekly allowance of $176.

Note:

• The selected scholar may be requested to deliver one or more lectures on their field of research.
• At the end of the study period in Pavia, scholars must provide both a report on the work completed at the host department and copies of any articles or publications.
• The selection of successful applicants will take place on 30 November 2020. 
• False statements may lead to exclusion from the selection process and/or the award of the scholarship.
• The possibility of providing other scholarships can be assessed on the basis of the evolution of the emergency situation due to the spread of COVID-19.
