Alex and Alec Boateng head new Universal Music UK label

The move is the latest in Universal’s global expansion efforts this year, following the launch of Def Jam operations in Africa, Southwest Asia and Vietnam. 

The 0207 Def Jam label derives the first half of its name from a telephone code in London – where the twins were born – and celebrates the music, culture and art the UK is popular for. The second half acknowledges the pioneering American hip hop label Def Jam that has been in operation for more than 30 years.

“Bringing the Boateng brothers together at 0207 Def Jam is an important moment in British culture,” Universal Music UK chairman and CEO David Joseph said. “Alec and Alex have always done things their own way with success always quick to follow. They have already assembled an exceptionally talented top team with a clear vision for this exciting new chapter in the history of one of the world’s most famous labels.”

Def Jam interim chairman and CEO Jeff Harleston described the Boatengs’ appointment as a perfect fit. “Their creativity, artist relationships and connection with culture are all key elements that have made Def Jam such an important label for over 35 years. I have no doubt that Alex, Alec and their team will only make the label and the brand even stronger,” he said. 

Alex and Alec Boateng take up their new positions with several decades of professional experience between them: Alex joins 0207 Def Jam from a 10-year tenure at Universal Music UK, where his roles included overseeing music campaigns for global stars including Drake, The Weeknd and Nicki Minaj as head of Island Records’ first Urban Division, whereas Alec comes into his new role from a decorated A&R career at Warner Music Group’s Atlantic Records, and many years as a broadcaster on BBC 1Xtra.

Alec Boateng added: “Music, art and artists really, really matter. I’m super excited to play a leadership role in this brilliant new space we’re creating for amazing music and talent to live and evolve. A space which will support both our teams and our artists to be the best version of themselves.”

Meanwhile, Alex Boateng’s former colleague, Amy Tettey, will join 0207 Def Jam as managing director, while Jacqueline Eyewe and Char Grant will head the company’s marketing and A&R respectively.
