Top African dance songs of 2020
Dance floors across Africa were reduced to tumbleweeds for most of the year due to COVID-19 restrictions. But great songs continued to boom with African artists producing runaway hits that salvaged the continent’s repute for its vibrant dance scene. The crisis also forced musicians’ hands at reinventing themselves and saw much of their content delivered directly to fans through live streams, digital concerts and surprise releases. The music served as a welcome distraction from the pandemic and the world around us, and, to some extent, was a beacon of hope.
As we say goodbye to 2020, we’ve curated a list of impressive dance songs that were released by African artists this year. The continent’s music powerhouses, South Africa and Nigeria, dominate the list as expected. South African amapiano still commands the dance scene in southern Africa with plenty of tunes this year. The queen of dance, Busiswa, made her foray into amapiano, dropping her sexy all-girl summer song ‘SBWL’. And the pioneers of the genre, MFR Souls, hit the big time in 2020 with one of the most consumed amapiano tunes, ‘Amanikiniki’. Both songs feature Internet dance sensation Kamo Mphela.
House DJ Master KG failed to make the 2020 South African Music Awards nominations list, but his hit ‘Jerusalema’, which achieved phenomenal success and global reach with about 300 million views on YouTube, is arguably the biggest African dance of 2020. Emerging bilingual rapper Costa Tich gets a huge nod for his momentous hip hop dance track ‘Nkalakatha’ featuring local heavyweights AKA and Riky Rick.
Meanwhile, the stakes were high in the west of Africa with Naija Afrobeats stars arming themselves with fresh music. Afrobeats juggernaut and the continent’s most bankable musician, Wizkid, released his long-awaited album Made in Lagos, which has received excitable commentary from fans and pushed more than 10 million streams on Spotify. The list includes the artist's bangers ‘No Stress’ and ‘Ginger’, which features fellow Nigerian superstar Burna Boy, who bagged his second Grammy nomination for his latest project Twice As Tall. Tiwa Savage made an impression with her emotionally charged album Celia, while bringing calmness to the uncertainty of the moment on comforting-yet-groovy tracks like ‘Koroba’.
On the eastern side of Africa, new Tanzanian bongo flava sensation Zuchu made a name for herself and a comfortable landing on our list with her sultry song ‘Cheche’ featuring Diamond Platnumz.
