'Own The Stage' finale to take place in Nigeria

Tecno Own The Stage is a karaoke-themed talent search competition that ran in Nigeria, Kenya and Tanzania, and aired weekly on DStv’s Africa Magic channel. Kenyans Pascal (Pascalino Lpesino Lenguro) and Sikin (Elizabeth), Tanzania’s Nandy (Nande Charles Mfinanga) and Shaapera of Nigeria are the final four out of 15 contestants in the race for the grand prize.

The finale is taking place in Nigeria, where South African producer Relebogile Mabotja will direct the show as well as coach contestants in the build-up to the big event. Mabotja is one of the few female musical directors on the continent and being selected to musical direct Tecno Own The Stage is a testament to the excellent work she has produced and directed over the years.

The contestants themselves have big dreams if they win the grand prize. Pascal, an actor who lives in Nairobi, would like to open a studio if he wins the money and he hopes to one day sing on the world stage. Starting from the age of six, Pascal would often sing for his mum. His biggest musical influence is American singer John Legend. His Kenyan compatriot Sikin, a student of performing arts who used to play in the National Youth Orchestra, will use the money to buy musical instruments. Tanzania's representative Nandy hopes to build on the contest to support other up-and-coming artists while developing her own career. For Shaapera, a 29-year-old old teacher from Benué State in Nigeria, she intends to use the money to boost her music career. Shaapera is a singer and a rapper; she also plays the drums and conga in her church choir.

The first season of the karaoke singing competition drew 15 contestants - five each each from Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria. Paired with industry mentors, the singers faced the Tecno Own The Stage panel of judges - comprised of Nigerian diva Yemi Alade, Bien-Aime Baraza from Kenyan band Sauti Sol and Nigerian rapper M.I - every week in the hope of securing their spot in this Sunday's live finale.
