DJ Khaled to host 2021 MTV Africa Music Awards
US hip hop star and record executive DJ Khaled was last week confirmed as the host of the 2021 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) in Kampala, Uganda, on 20 February.
Last held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2016, the MAMAs were established to recognise and honour the most popular contemporary music on the continent. The 2021 MAMAs will be held in partnership with Uganda’s Ministry of Tourism.
Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, this awards ceremony, broadcasting globally for the first time on MTV, will be held virtually, with DJ Khaled hosting the event from his home in Miami alongside co-hosts from Africa.
“MTV has always been a great partner, so I jumped at the opportunity to host this year’s MAMAs,” DJ Khaled said. “I can’t wait to celebrate the incredible music that comes out of Africa, which has inspired me throughout my career.”
ViacomCBS Networks Africa’s Craig Paterson said: “The latest edition of the MAMAs promises to be our biggest and most innovative yet. Millions of fans worldwide will enjoy the digitally reimagined celebration of African music via multiple broadcasts globally.
“We are excited to partner with Uganda to bring viewers a unique format and experience that positions Africa’s diverse heritage and digital innovation.”
The 2021 MAMAs will reward outstanding music in 20 categories, including the new Best Ugandan Act and Alone Together: Best Lockdown Performance awards, which will celebrate the host country’s talent and reflect on the music scene of 2020, respectively.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Burna Boy, Davido, Tiwa Savage and Wizkid, South Africa’s Master KG, Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz, and São Tomé and Príncipe’s Calema are in the running for the Artist of the Year Award.
The 20 February ceremony will be broadcast on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and MTV Africa (DStv Channel 130).
Voting is still in progress and the public can vote via the MAMAs official website.
