AFRIMMA reveals hosts for US awards ceremony
The organisers of the African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) have announced the hosts for the award ceremony’s 2016 edition, to take place on 15 October at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters in Dallas, Texas in the USA.
Nigerian comedian Basketmouth and the American reality TV actress Cynthia Bailey will take charge of the event, which organised by Big A Entertainment.
The 2015 edition of the event saw Davido crowned Best Male in West Africa, while Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz took the East African trophy and rapper AKA won in the Southern African region. Among the ladies Nigeria's Yemi Alade was named Best Female in West Africa while Vanessa Mdee represented the East African region. Other winners included Sauti Sol, Sarkodie, Mani Bella and Serge Beynaud.
Along with established acts performing at the ceremony last year, upcoming artists were encouraged to enter for a competition tagged ‘Set the Stage’. It allowed young artists perform before some of the most popular artists across the continent. It is as yet unclear if this would continue this year.
Now in its third year, the African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) claims to be the sole awards ceremony in the diaspora catering to all musical genres from the continent.
In his role as host, Basketmouth carries on from last year. His female co-host Bailey replaces the Ugandan comedian Anne Kansiime. According to Big A Entertainment, this years pairing "is going to be the best of both worlds as we pair Africa's creative talent with an American TV sweetheart."
