Call for entries: espYoungLegends competition in SA
Following the outstanding success of its inaugural espYoungLegends competition earlier this year, espAfrika, the producer of the popular Cape Town International Jazz festival (CTIJF) is calling on young jazz-inspired bands to win the chance to perform at the 2017 edition of CTIJF, dubbed ‘Africa’s Grandest Gathering’.
Entrants will be assessed by an expert panel that includes the likes of Billy Domingo, CTIJF’s Festival Director and impresario Bev Scott-Brown. Shortlisted finalists will also be subject to the scrutiny and vote of South Africa’s music-loving public later in the competition.
“Due to the overwhelming popularity of last year’s competition, we have opened the procedure for submissions much earlier,” said Billy Domingo, “It's never a good feeling turning talented people away, so we wanted to give bands plenty of time to get their acts together, as well as extending the opportunity to vote to the fans.”
Cape Town songbird Lana Crowster, who won the debut competition, explained that getting the change to perform on the Bassline stage at the 17th CTIJF has given her career a significant boost. “The opportunity I was given to perform on a world-class stage in front of an international audience has been a tremendous confidence booster. This has enabled me to open the doors to the possibility of performing at other international events and a good chance to take my music global!” she said.
How to enter
Upcoming bands interested in entering the competition are required to complete the online application form, including music videos or sound clips and a brief biography.
This competition is all about the nuances of the live performance. Beyond being South African residents, entrants (no more than six members per band) must be entertaining and demonstrate a clear ability to grab the audience’s attention.
espYoungLegends opened for submissions on 11 August and closes on Monday 26 September 2016.
The Top 20 will be announced on Tuesday 11 October, with public voting taking place to secure one lucky group a spot in the Top 5. Thereafter the overall winner will be declared on 1 November 2016.
