Gee slams Gambian activist-rappers
Gibou Bala Gaye, popularrly known as Gee, Gambia’s rap-mbalah singer has spoken out against activist artists. The controversial rapper wondered why the activism of his colleagues come after leaving the country.
"My problem with these Gambian Rappers/Activist in Senegal," he wrote on Facebook, "is mainly they waited till they left Gambia and then record such songs. My problem with Another Activist/Artist Manager that I worked with just for time was he tried to stage a protest in Gambia from Outside Gambia”.
The political impasse in Gambia, prior to the departure of Yahya Jammeh, affected artists in different ways. Some left the country; others postponed theiralbum launch events. A few, like Killa Ace and Retsam, recorded songs against Jammeh's decision to stay on in power from neighbouring Senegal. Gee, who returned to the music industry last year after a hiatus, is not impressed with this latter group, seemingly accusing such artists of cowardice.
"My respect for #GambiaHasDecided campaign was when everything was done on [local] ground," he added, "even though it was formed after elections when the environment was a bit loose and people already had a little taste of what freedom feels like.
"From my understanding the heads of the #GambiaHasDecided ran to Senegal cause of threats like being arrests they were getting. What signal does that send to us? Everyone wants to be "the guy" but being "the guy" comes with sacrifices I feel most of us aren’t still ready to take."
