Malawi: Gemini Major’s Ragga Ragga video breaks record
Gemini Major has hit 1 million YouTube plays for his ‘Ragga Ragga’ video and in the process the rapper, who is based in South Africa, has become the first Malawian artist to surpass the milestone.
By the time of publishing, the video had amassed almost 1 080 000 YouTube views. The video features South African artists Riky Rick, Cassper Nyovest and Major League DJz as well as Zimbabwe’s Nadia Nakai. ‘Ragga Ragga’ was published on 30 September 2016 via Gemini Major’s YouTube channel, which has more than 3 200 subscribers.
‘Ragga Ragga’ is not the only video making waves in Malawi. Coming second with more than 220 000 views is ‘Nalero’ by Nepman and Kabol Lombwe. Released on YouTube in September 2014, ‘Nalero’ made headlines last year when it received 100 000 hits. The figures are remarkable in a country such as Malawi, where access to the internet is comparatively low.
Other music videos from Malawi making good progress on YouTube are San B’s ‘Wamphamvu’, Janta’s ‘Divorce’ and Sipe’s ‘Chikondi Ndi Ndalama’.
‘Ragga Ragga’ was shot by Studio Space Pictures, an award-nominated South African media and film production house based in Johannesburg.
Gemini Major, real name Ben Kamoto, is signed as a producer to Nyovest’s Family Tree Records. He has produced for big South African names such as Big Nuz, Khuli Chana and Da LES as well as Tanzania’s Diamond Platinumz and Nigeria’s Burna Boy. His production prowess saw him nominated for Producer of the Year at the 2015 South African Hip Hop Awards together with Riky Rick, Anatii, Ganja Beatz and Tweezy.
Gemini Major is also a 2017 Metro FM Music Awards nominee in the Best Collaboration category. He is competing against Miss Pru, Bucie, DJ Speedsta and Kwesta. The awards ceremony takes place on Saturday, 25 February.
