Basadi ba Mintsu
Bio
BASADI BA MINTSU is an all-woman, transnational, political art music
collective comprised of 4 women from Mozambique, Cuba, Brazil, and
South Africa. They come together to celebrate art and their ancestry
through their musicality, uniting elements and sounds of traditional African
music (with mbiras, guitars, violin and percussion). The members of
Basadi's musical and poetic escape are: Beauty Sitoe (Mozambique)
Ekaterine James (Cuba), Serati (South Africa) and Yurungai (Brazil). Using
the metaphor of the elements and cycles of nature as a symbol of female
fertility and creation, they blend their diverse musical and cultural origins
with the common ground they share: their African ancestry. A celebration
of sisterhood and a tribute to the women that came before, Basadi ba
Mintsu, is translated as "roots women". In concert they present songs from their recently released EP "Star Woman. Sweat Woman", as well as poetry, African
folk songs, and Brazilian and Cuban spirituals. The Basadi presentation has two formats:
an acoustic format with the accompaniment of some kind of percussion
such as a djembe, and the electric format with drums and bass
