MTN Uganda launches second caller tune awards
Season 2 of Uganda’s MTN CallerTunez Online Awards will run between July and December. The awards platform was launched in 2015 in partnership with Chinese electronics company Huawei to recognise artists and content producers who have the most downloaded caller tunes on the MTN portal.
Artists will get up to 2 million Ugandan shillings (about $550) in monthly rewards while content producers will receive 1 million Ugandan shillings. MTN customers with the most downloads will win up to 50 000 Ugandan shillings.
“The MTN CallerTunez Awards are meant to recognise and reward both the artists that create the content used as caller tunes as well as the customers who download and use the tunes,” MTN Uganda chief marketing officer Somdev Sen said. “We are happy to provide our artists with an alternative source of income, especially during this time when the pandemic has disrupted their work.”
Some of the music categories to be recognised include:
- Zouk & Band
- RnB
- Old School
- Religious
- Afro-Beat & Afro-Pop
- Dancehall & Ragga
- Reggae
- Hip Hop
- Classical
- Traditional
Season 1 of the awards were held in 2016 when artists and producers of recorded quotes, jokes, skits and other sound bites were rewarded for their work with cash prizes. Past music winners include Rema Namakula, Radio and Weasel, Bebe Cool, Gravity Omutujju, Vincent Segawa, David Lutalo, Ziza Bafana and Zanie Brown.
